Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 within Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise as a young child. The actress worked as a late night nurse to allow her aunt time that she needed in her working day to pursue her passion for writing, theatre and literature. DuVernay was brought to the movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting political activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who had a social conscience and advised DuVernay to be creative and express herself through art. Although DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the marches for civil rights over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. Her time in Selma inspired her later to write a script for a movie that focused on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was in her college. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to investigate the waste at the residence of one of the jury. After being disappointed in journalistic work by the assignments she was assigned, she chose to go on to a job in the field of publicity. DuVernay began her work as a junior assistant to publicity in a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. After this, she founded her own public relations company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The agency has launched a wide range of promotion and lifestyle networks such as Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
